LCC Language & Culture Screening Series Presents: Arrival (2016)

February 7, 2018 @ 8:00 pm - 11:00 pm

Dear residents,

Are you a movie buff?

Do you want to meet new people?

Interested in having lively discussions about language and culture?

The Language and Culture Club is holding a series of film screenings focusing on themes relating to language and cultural identity. A movie night will be held once a month, ending with a post-screening discussion to allow residents to mingle and share their thoughts.

The films chosen for the Language and Culture series will…

critically examine the relationship between cultures, languages, and the human condition

survey the experience of living in a foreign city

explore other media of communication beyond language

illustrate cultural identity through comedic depictions of daily life

offer an in-depth perspective on cultures beyond their exoticised image

The details of the first screening are as follows:

Movie: Arrival (2016)

Date: 7 Feb (Wed)

Time: 8-11pm

Venue: 3/F Studio, Lap-Chee College

Synopsis: Arrival is a 2016 American science fiction drama film directed by Denis Villeneuve. Starring Amy Adams, Jeremy Renner, and Forest Whitaker, the film follows a linguist enlisted by the U.S. Army to discover why aliens have arrived on Earth before tensions lead to war.

Our first chosen film, Arrival (2016), is a movie that investigates the very nature of language itself. What are the fundamental elements of language, beyond translation and grammar? How does it shape our lives, our concept of time and space, or our relationship with others?  Linguistics professor Louise Banks (Amy Adams) confronts these questions head-on as she attempts to interpret and communicate with invaders, world leaders, and military generals.

Questions to think about in the post-screening discussion:

How would two entities communicate without a mutual language?

How do the communication difficulties faced by the individuals in the film relate to our own lives in this globalised and cosmopolitan city?

Looking forward to seeing you then!

Regards,

LCC Language and Culture Club
