Who are we & Why we do what we do?

We are facing an unprecedented global emergency and we must act now, to save what we have left. Many current life forms could be annihilated or committed to extinction by the end of this century. If the climate and ecological emergency is not addressed, sea levels will rise, extreme weather will arrive, millions of people will become displaced, amongst many more consequences. Thousands of people are currently striking across Europe to demand government action for the crisis, including London, Berlin, Switzerland, Rome etc. Led by influential leaders, like Greta Thunberg.

So what can we, as residents at Lap Chee, do to contribute to the cause? We hope that through the establishment of the Lap Chee Goes Green committee, we can advocate for food waste management, plastic, paper, glass and metal recycling, reducing the use of disposables, including plastic cups/bags, cutlery and straws, and to conserve energy, so as to reduce the use of fossil fuels. Though we are a small unit in this global world, we believe that every individual faces a responsibility to contribute toward mitigating our environmental problems. Especially in the context of Hong Kong, a city that wanes in its sustainable and recycling efforts, it is important that small communities such as University halls lead the starting steps of making greater change within the larger Hong Kong community.

Essentially, we hope to play our part in the global climate crisis.

Food waste management:

Lap Chee Goes Green would like to advocate for food waste management. We would like to promote the idea of reducing unnecessary waste by learning what is consumable based on the condition of the food itself rather than a suggested date set during the manufacturing stage of the product. Knowledge of proper food storage method can also prolong its lifespan.

Recycling:

We would like to establish an effective recycling system that recycles plastic, paper, metal and glass from each floor. The currently recycling bins on each floor are inefficient, and are not used. We would like to establish a system where plastic, paper, metal and glass can be recycled properly from each floor and are handled properly.

Composting:

We have initiated a pilot project for composting across all floors, that will hopefully encourage residents to compost their waste. We hope to expand this project to all floors, and utilise the fertilisers we get to potentially grow out own garden at Lap Chee one day!

What do we do?

We aim to:

Raise the attention of all the residents in Lap-Chee College about sustainability issues. Provide educational information to the residents on how to contribute to sustainability, including recycling, energy-saving, etc.
Invite professional staff in the Sustainability Office in HKU for video sharing and potential workshops, which would further attract more involvements from residents.
Establish collaboration with other environment protection organisations in Hong Kong for community services beyond Lap-Chee College.

Though we are a small unit in this global world, we believe that every individual faces a responsibility to contribute toward mitigating our environmental problems.
