Who are we?
We’ve set up the Residence-based Academic Advising System (RAAS) at Lap-Chee College to help freshers (Year-1 students) get started on their academic journey. Through experienced students who are willing to share their knowledge and experience, freshers receive first-hand guidance in navigating a new educational paradigm. Every fresher who enters Lap-Chee College is automatically enrolled in RAAS.
What do we do?
We believe that every student who enters the University and specifically, Lap-Chee College deserves the very best. Transitioning to academic life at university can be challenging, and we hope, with the expertise and experience of our academic advisers, we can be the channel through which freshers have their questions answered.
How does one go about course selection? How does one navigate the HKU Portal? Do professors use an absolute or relative grading methodology? How do we pick majors and minors?
Our academic advisers, with the help of the tutorial team at Lap-Chee, will help you answer these questions from Day 1.
Our core objectives are to help students:
- Understand the aims of university education
- Understand the culture and ethos of learning at HKU
- Explore future educational opportunities
Why do we do this?
We do this because we care deeply about the needs of our student community. We’ve seen that the academic requirements of incoming HKU freshers are not always met by faculty-appointed professors who act as academic advisors. The formal nature of this arrangement at the university level only exacerbates the mismatch between the needs of the students and the advice they receive.
There is a strong case to be made that incoming freshers are helped a lot more by student advisers who can relate to their problems and relay practical advice. Our advisers, trained by CEDARS and AAO, will carry out their responsibilities in a semi-formal manner through interactive events and personalised advice.
Historically, RAA has been a core part of CEDARS at The University of Hong Kong. To liaise with the University Senate approved recommendations in the year 2012, Residence-based Academic Advising (RAA) system at Lap-Chee College commenced from the academic year 2018-19 to complement academic advising by the Faculties.
